HOW TO BECOME AN IAS OFFICER
To become an IAS officer, one has to go through the Civil Service Examination (CSE), which is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) every year.
UPSC releases its exam calendar every year and CSE is generally conducted in May-June.
WHAT IS CSE?
The civil Service examination is your way to the IAS. CSE has three levels. First is a preliminary examination which is an objective type of paper. The second is the mains examination which is subjective and the last is the Interview.
Preliminary Examination
In the Preliminary stage, there are two papers. The first paper is on general studies, officially known as General Studies Paper 1 and the second one is aptitude based generally known as CSAT, Civil Service Aptitude Test, and is officially known as General Studies Paper 2.
- General Studies Paper 1 contains 100 questions of 2 marks each. Each right answer will give 2 marks and for every wrong answer, 1/3rd marks will be subtracted.
- General Studies Paper 2 also follows the same marking criteria; the only difference is the number of questions, which is 80 and it’s also qualifying in nature.

Mains Examination
Mains examination contains nine papers, all of which are descriptive.
Two papers of 300 marks each are of qualifying nature. Candidates need 25% marks to qualify for these papers. The first one is an Indian Language Paper and the second one is an English language Paper.

Paper 1- Essay
There will be two essays. A choice of topics will be given to the candidates. The total marks are 250.
Paper 2 – General Studies Paper 1
This paper will cover Indian heritage and culture, History and Geography of the world and Society, and will be of 250 marks.
Paper 3- General Studies Paper 2
This paper will cover Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice, and International relations and will be of 250 marks.
Paper 4- General Studies Paper 3
This paper will cover Technology, Economic Development, Biodiversity, Security, and Disaster Management and will be 250 marks.
Paper 5- General Studies Paper 4
This paper will cover Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude and will be 250 marks.
Paper 6 and Paper 7-Optional Subject
The papers will be 250 marks each.
Personality Test-Interview
The personality test is the last stage of this long process and weighs 275 marks. The interview is generally taken by a 5 member panel. The interview is mainly to test your personality and suitability for the job.
WHO ARE ELIGIBLE TO BECOME IAS
✅ A candidate applying for CSE should be 21 years of age with a minimum education qualification of a bachelor’s degree.
✅ Candidates can have a bachelor’s degree in any subject stream.
✅ The age limit is defined according to the category.
- For Unreserved and EWS, 32 years.
- For SC / ST, 32 years+5 years.
- For the physically disabled, 32 years+10 years.
✅ Other requirements include nationality. Candidates must be a citizen of India, a person of Indian origin, or a subject of Nepal, Bhutan, or Tibet settled in India before 1st January 1962.
ROLE OF IAS
An IAS acts as a bridge between the government authorities and the common people. IAS is responsible for multiple things. The work spreads from implementation to management. An IAS is responsible for supervising the implementation of every scheme and policy made by the government.
The job role is not limited, it is diverse, it includes interaction with the locals, solving their problems, initiating welfare programs, maintaining law and order, and coordinating with departments and elected representatives.
SALARY AND PERKS OF AN IAS
The basic salary of an IAS officer starts at around 56000 rupees according to the 7th pay commission. This goes up to 2.5 lahks depending on the position. But this is just the basic salary. The gross salary or the total salary includes the basic salary and the allowances like house rent allowance, travel allowance, and dearness allowance.

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE JUMPING IN THE RACE
- It’s a long journey. The success rate is less than 1% and one can never be sure to clear the exam on the first attempt.
- Anything under the sun. The syllabus of the exam is vast and near to impossible to cover everything. So if you think you are studious then maybe it’s not enough. You need to work smart and not hard to ace the examination.
- Patience. One has to give not months but years to succeed in this exam. Your willpower needs to be strong and your purpose very clear in the first place.
- Money and resources. With time online free courses and resources have become easy to access but still one can’t ignore the money aspect. Coaching fees, books, and living in a different city will cost money.
